Before I begin to talk about this song, I should first explain the name. At the time this song was produced, I was living in the room 303 in my boarding school dorm. I was the only person who was fortunate enough to have a single. All my closest friends would hang out in 303 since it had the most space. A lot of great memories were made here. We made fun of each other, shared personal thoughts, and snuck into this room late at night quite often. The majority of my friends were in this room while I produced this track. They served as a fresh pair of ears telling me what they didn’t like and what they did like. When the song was done, I decided to dedicate it to that room and its memories.
Secrets of 303 was my attempt to change some of the cliche elements of an EDM song. Most EDM songs have a constant beat and lack non-synthesised instruments. To change this, I incorporated a lot of piano and strings. Piano is actually used quite often in EDM but it usually serves as a background instrument. There are usually layers of other synthesised instruments on top. In this track, I made the piano the main focus and used strings as a background. If you listen carefully you can also hear vocal chants in some parts of the song. I also created a drum and bass-like rhythm in order to move a little away from EDM’s constant beat. Unfortunately while performing the final mix-down, I made the bass sounds too soft. I did not notice this until I sent it to be mastered. Fortunately, I feel as though the only time those base sounds come through the mix is when it’s played on studio monitors.
