Shanghai Murder is by far one of my favourite songs I have produced. It contains multiple unique elements.

Originally this was not supposed to be a song. It was a project file in my DAW meant to be used to modify piano sounds to make them sound more unique. After playing around with piano sounds, I began brainstorming and adding ideas. You can hear one of the outcomes of this projects original goal in the beginning of the song (piano chords reversed).

I wanted this song to be a song that stood out from my other songs. I believe it did in many ways.

In terms of non percussive instruments, I achieved this with the flute in the beginning, using the Chinese Erhu Violin and the Chinese Gushing Zither.

In terms of percussion, I achieved this with the discrete kick, the glass like high-hat and the change of style during the break.

I also achieved uniqueness by creating my own bass sounds. They can be heard towards the end. The bass in my opinion sounds spacious and airy.

The reason this song is being put in the works in progress section of my portfolio is because I feel as though it needs a lot more.  My next goal is to find a male vocalist. I can’t wait to see where this song goes.
